Abstract

This study clarified characteristics of “independence and initiative” of nursing students during on-site clinical practice referring to literatures by a concept analysis method. As a result, extracted defining attributes of independence and initiative were “responsibility as a student nurse,” “taking initiative with considerations and actions,” “persistent approaches,” and “emergence of self-awareness as a nursing-provider.” “Self-awareness as a learner,” “desire to please patients,” “presence of peers in the completion of clinical training,” “acquisition of self-efficacy,” and “presence of a role-model.” were extracted as antecedents. As for consequences, the analysis extracted “working on a self-assignment in training executions,” “acquisition of the role as a nursing student during the clinical practice,” “figuring out necessary nursing care for a patient,” “improvements in assessment and planning for nursing,” and “the resolution for nursing profession.” Characteristics of “independence and initiative” of nursing students during the clinical practice were based on taking responsibility for their choice and related to the identity as a nursing care provider. It was suggested that “independence and initiative” of nursing students was affected by the awareness of pursuing a career as a nurse, the pleasure of nursing practice, the presence of study mates in the practical training course, and the acquisition of self-efficacy, which were kept in mind through educational involvements.
