Backgrounds: In this study, the factors associated with the appearance and disappearance of guilt in preterm mothers are described, and suggestions for nursing care are investigated.
Methods: The data collection method was a semistructured interview with eight mothers who gave birth prematurely. The data analysis method was an exploratory content analysis of the verbatim record.
Results: The factors associated with the appearance of guilt are as follows: [body image of a child in a critical condition], [restricted childcare], [left alone in the hospital], [beginning of childcare at home], [unhealthy pregnancy and illness], [lack of consideration from family], [premature birth], [forced breastfeeding], [presence of complications and needle marks]; [restricted relationship with children]. Factors related to the disappearance of guilt are [encouragement from surroundings], [positive switching of consciousness], [breast milk is coming out], [acquisition of stable pace of daily life], [smooth growth of children], and [healing of complications].
Conclusions: It is necessary to provide intentional and continuous psychological care, including for parents and families, to provide information and build a childcare support system to support the growth and childcare process of preterm infants.
