Abstract

Background: There is a shortage of nursing faculty in Japan due to the rapid increase in the number of nursing universities and the leveling off of nursing schools. In order to retain nursing faculty, it is urgent to explore the factors that influence job satisfaction of nursing faculty.

Objective: To qualitatively analyze the factors influencing job satisfaction of nursing faculty by reviewing domestic literature.

Methods: Twenty-six articles were searched on the Web of the Central Library of Medicine and CiNii.

Results: Factors influencing job satisfaction of nursing faculty members were classified into eight categories: [educational experience as a foundation], [identity formation as a nurse educator], [commitment and motivation to continue working], [smooth research activities], [work-life balance], [organizational environment and support system], [support for young faculty members, assistant professors, assistant professors, and new faculty members], and [stress management]. The study consisted of eight categories.

The important factors affecting job satisfaction of nursing faculty were educational experience, identity, and commitment, which were similar to the educational abilities and competencies of nursing faculty in previous studies. Research activities were beneficial in improving educational competencies regardless of the institution, especially the support of the organization and administrators, including the support of faculty with short teaching experience.

CONCLUSION: In addition to educational experience and identity, the main factors that influence job satisfaction of nursing faculty are support for faculty with short teaching experience and stress management.
