One of the goals of basic nursing education is to educate nursing students so that they can form a philosophy of nursing. To test this hypothesis, we conducted an interview survey of nine nursing students: three students each in the second to fourth years of college. The interview results were transcribed verbatim and analyzed qualitatively and inductively. The results showed that philosophy of nursing as recognized by the students consisted of six categories. The categories “realizing that they wanted to be thanked,” “thinking in a patient-centered way,” and “realizing that they were professionals” were derived from the students’ engaging in self-insight in clinical practice. Additionally, the categories “supporting patients both physically and mentally,” “empowering patients,” and “thinking about the lives of patients” described roles of nursing professionals. Our future task will be to identify the process of formation of a philosophy of nursing among nursing students.
