Abstract

Japan is experiencing progressive urbanization and advancement of nuclear family structure, thus the opportunities for children to interact with the elderly are decreasing. While it can be considered that interaction between the two generates positive effects, there are few objective reports on the subject. In order to facilitate exchange of ideas with the elderly, a single child participated in the activities of a day care looking after people with dementia. This study examines effects on the cardiac autonomic nervous activity observed during the course of activities such as “word games”, “painting pictures”, “talking”, “games”, and“ balloon volley ball”.
After observing the activities for approximately five hours the results showed no significant difference in the heart rate. In the HF area, expressing the value of activity of parasympathetic nerves, the highest value was seen in“ word games”; in the LF/HF area, expressing value of the ratio between sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve activity, the highest value was seen in “games”. While measuring the average heart rate values, recorded every hour from the time the parties met each other, a trend was seen where the heart rate gradually decreased during the course of the four-hour period since the beginning. The above results also suggest that it is necessary to examine length of the visit as well as the details of activities performed with the elderly.
