Provisions Made by Schools in Response to Requests by Parents of Children who Have Chronic Illnesses Unrelated to Food Allergies
Abstract
Eight children (7 pupils and 1 student) with chronic illnesses unrelated to food allergies were subjects in a survey on school lunches. Diabetes was the most common disease among the eight children. One child brought lunch from home; among the seven who ate the school lunch, 5 children were served restricted amounts of food varieties and quantities. Parents of 2 children responded they worried about the amount of nutrients. Five parents felt that the school gave appropriate consideration to their requests. The parent of the child who brought lunch from home hoped that if possible the child could eat the school lunch with the other children in order to promote a happy meal time. This parent has asked for an appointment to confer with the school dietician to realize this plan.
