Abstract

A brief biography of Ogata Koan, a physician in the mid 19th century Japan is presented, including his contribution to start and spread smallpox vaccination and educating thousands of Japanese students, many of who later became great contributors to built modern Japanese state. He translated numerous medical books from Holland into Japanese, which greatly helped development of modern medical sciences in Japan. The founder of this journal, Medicine and Biology, Tomio Ogata, was one of his great grandsons.
